ELKTON — A gunman remained on the loose Tuesday after he shot a man in the parking lot of an Elkton-area bar over the weekend, according to the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office.
The victim, whom investigators described only as a 27-year-old Wilmington, Del., resident, suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his buttocks at approximately 12:30 a.m. Saturday outside the Catfish Tavern in the 200 block of Fletchwood Road, northeast of Elkton, police reported.
He was taken by private vehicle to Union Hospital in Elkton, where the driver dropped him off at the emergency department and left, police said. An ambulance later transported the wounded man to Christiana Hospital in Delaware, where he was treated and later discharged, police added.
CCSO deputies were patrolling the Winding Brook neighborhood off Fletchwood Road, when they heard nearby gunshots and headed toward the sound to investigate, according to Lt. Michael Holmes, an agency spokesman. They found spent shell casings in the Catfish Tavern parking lot — but no victim, no suspect and no witnesses, Holmes reported.
Meanwhile, Elkton Police Department officers went to Union Hospital, after an emergency room doctor there reported that he was treating a gunshot victim, police reported. By state law, a physician must contact authorities whenever he or she is treating any patient who is, or is believed to be, an assault victim.
CCSO detectives interviewed the gunshot victim, after learning about him, but he provided only scant information, police reported.
“We’re still trying to determine what occurred. The investigation is ongoing,” Holmes told the Cecil Whig.
Anyone with information that might help investigators identify a suspect and, or, determine how the shooting occurred and the circumstances surrounding it is asked to please call CCSO Det. Michael O’Donnell, lead investigator, at 410-392-2123.
