CALVERT — An investigation is continuing after a two-alarm blaze destroyed a barn on Hubis Lane early Tuesday morning, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
A passerby called 911 at 2:50 a.m. after noticing flames shooting from the outbuilding at 23 Hubis Lane, a farm lane off Route 273 near Calvert Elementary School, fire officials reported.
Approximately 40 firefighters with area volunteer fire companies, including some from Pennsylvania, battled the blaze for about three hours, before bringing it under control, fire officials said. The Community Fire Company of Rising Sun served as the on-scene command unit, fire officials added.
The blaze caused approximately $200,000 in structural damage to the barn, which has been deemed a loss, and it destroyed an estimated $50,000 in property contained inside the outbuilding, reported Deputy State Fire Marshal Michael G. Selvage, lead fire detective.
Investigators identified Jesse McMillan as the property owner.
As of Tuesday night, the cause of the blaze and its point of origin remained under investigation, Selvage reported.
