ELKTON — A late night single vehicle crash on Interstate 95 where the highway travels under Appleton Road took three lives Friday according to Maryland State Police at the JFK Barrack.
Troopers identified the victims as Savitri Pokhan, 43, from New York and two men from Henrico, Va.; Renaldo Smith, 28 and Michael Zazim, 20. All three were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened around 11:40 p.m. on southbound I-95 near mile marker 107. The Office of the Maryland Medical Examiner now has all three for autopsies.
According to investigators for unknown reasons a 2017 Acura MDX left the road and struck a right shoulder guardrail. The vehicle then traveled the length of the guardrail, struck a sign and then a concrete pillar at the overpass.
Police identified Pokhan as the driver and that Smith was in the passenger seat with Zazim in the rear. Neither passenger was wearing his seatbelt, police noted. Additionally, according to police, alcohol may be a factor.
Troopers from the Perryville barrack continue to investigate.
