Perryville, like all Cecil County towns, is always on the hunt for grant money to help with its infrastructure and amenities. The town is looking for a grant writer, which will be funded by the town since it did not win a state grant for the hire.
PERRYVILLE — The Town of Perryville’s mayor and commissioners have agreed that the town needs one person in town hall whose sole job is to write grants.
“We cannot continue to have the stress on George Patchell for grant writing,” Mayor Matt Roath said of the town administrator.
With grant writing season approaching, Roath said he doesn’t want the town to miss funding opportunities.
“Any legitimate grant writer would be able to pay for himself,” Roath said.
“I wholeheartedly agree with you,” said Commissioner Michelle Linkey, asking if a full-time or part-time writer would be sought.
Perryville and Rising Sun applied together to share a grant writer through a state grant program, but did not win.
“We came up short on some of these big grants including the grant writer,” the mayor said. “Every single month we go without one we’re losing money.”
The cost was brought into consideration.
“Keep in mind $45,000 is an average salary,” said Commissioner Robert Taylor, noting that the East Coast is a high-demand area for grant writers. “We need one with exceptional skills.”
Commissioner Christina Aldridge agreed that the salary would be a worthwhile expense.
“Especially if it’s a grant writer for all the department,” Aldridge said.
It would likely be a remote position, Patchell said, noting there is no extra office space available in town hall.
“It hurts me that we are stunting our own growth by not having this person on staff,” Roath said.
Patchell said the position would be included in construction of the Fiscal 2024 budget.
