NEWARK, Del. — Nutter’s Sandwich Shoppe has closed its doors after more than seven decades in Newark.
“Thank you for frequenting our establishment over our 70 years in business,” a sign posted on the door read. “I appreciate all our amazing customers who were the reason for the success of Nutter’s.”
Located on Nottingham Road near the Maryland border, Nutter’s had served Newark since 1952.
Founded by Melvin and Viola Nutter as a grocery store, it later shifted to a deli and sandwich shop well-known for its crab bisque, crab cakes and an assortment of sandwiches.
The sign posted on the door indicated the owner is open to selling Nutter’s or leasing the space to another business.
Representatives of Nutter’s did not immediately return a request for comment on Wednesday.
