A motorcyclist was killed and four other people were injured Monday evening when a car collided with a motorcycle and caught fire near Rising Sun, police said.
The motorcyclist was identified as Ryan Spencer Hartnett, 20, of Elkton.
The accident happened just after 4 p.m. on Telegraph Road, near Brick Meeting House Road.
Trooper Chuck Mylin of the Maryland State Police North East barrack said a preliminary investigation found that the driver of the car, Richard Allan Davison, 56, was attempting to make a U-turn in front of his house on Telegraph Road when he crossed into the path of Hartnett's motorcycle, which was traveling east.
The motorcycle crashed into the passenger side of the car, setting both vehicles ablaze, Mylin said.
The force of the impact sent Hartnett through a window into the car. Firefighters later pulled him from the burning vehicle, but he died at the scene, police added.
Davison and his three passengers, all children, were pulled from the vehicle by bystanders, Mylin said.
Two of the children were flown by helicopter to the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Davison and the third child were taken by ambulance to Union Hospital in Elkton, Mylin added.
The names of children were withheld because of their age.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
