ELKTON — Investigators are blaming an “unspecified electrical failure” for a blaze that heavily damaged an outbuilding on a property near Elkton on Tuesday morning, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.
A passerby called 911 at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday after discovering the burning building in the 700 block of Union Church Road, northwest of Elkton, prompting area volunteer fire companies to respond, fire officials said. Singerly Volunteer Fire Company served as the on-scene command unit, fire officials added.
Approximately 30 volunteer firefighters battled the blaze for about 45 minutes, before bringing it under control, fire officials reported.
The blaze caused an estimated $70,000 in structural damage to the 40’-by-60’ wood-framed structure, according to an MOSFM spokesperson, who further reported that no one was injured.
During their on-scene investigation, MOSFM detectives determined that the fire started inside the building, fire officials reported. Investigators concluded that an unspecified electrical failure sparked the blaze, fire officials said, adding that they categorized it as an accidental fire.
