ELKTON — A water main break Thursday morning left many on Elkton's south side short of water.

A 12-inch main on Whitehall Road ruptured around 11:45 a.m. Thursday, flooding the street and the sidewalks. The cause is unknown at this time, and Elkton Department of Public Works crews were shutting off the main around noon.

"It's affected the whole south side of town, it's hard to say how many," Elkton Public Works Infrastructure Coordinator Mark Turnbull said.

Water service is expected to be disrupted for hours while crews work, according to town officials.

Down the road, Holly Hall Elementary School will dismiss students at 1:30 p.m. due to the main break, according to CCPS officials.

Elkton DPW crews closed down Whitehall Road between Walter Boulden Street and Norman Allen Street. Drivers can take alternate routes along those roads.
