FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Three Republican elected officials from Frederick County are seeking an Arizona-style immigration law for Maryland.

The measure proposed Thursday by County Commissioner John Thompson, state Delegate Charles Jenkins and Sheriff Chuck Jenkins would make it a state offense to be in the country illegally.

It also would require local police to question people about their immigration status if the officer has reason to suspect they are illegal. And it would prohibit hiring illegal immigrants for day labor.

The measure's first hurdle is acceptance by the Frederick County Commissioners for their 2011 legislative package. The board will discuss legislative proposals Tuesday.

Should it be accepted by the county, the measure would then require approval by the Democrat-controlled Maryland General Assembly.

We could discuss at tremendously great length and find it very difficult to come to agreement. One thing is for sure - if the Federal Government refuses, or otherwise neglects, to enforce existing Federal law, WHY NOT initiate a State-based iniative?

When one in 12 babies born in the US today is (1) a child of an illegal immigrant and (2) becomes an "automatic" US citizen, it is time for something to be done. We are a nation of immigrants and immigrant descendents, but the reason for the "automatic" citizenship has changed - much in the same way the "appropriateness" and "necessity" of strong labor unions has changed.

We want (I want) to see continued immigration TO the US of folks from all parts of the world who are seeking refuge from tyranny, poverty, etc., etc., but we need controls. Want to move here? That is wonderful, but BECOME part of the US. Learn the language, become PART of what makes the US great - and has made the US great - a fear and reverence for God, the ONE GOD, the "unknown" God, as the Apostle Paul pointed out.

There is absolutely NO reason to allow any employer to hire anyone who is not in the US legally. There is NO reason for children of those not here leaglly to legally, automatically, become US citizens.

We have "shackled" the hands of Law Enforcement too long and too often. We all ought to have nothing to hide and any Law Enforcement officer should have not hindrances to making the law work.

The law in Arizona is good for Arizona and good for the US. EVERY State needs to pass that law.
