A 31-year-old  Newark, Del.  woman  jumped off the Chesapeake City Bridge on Wednesday afternoon.  A  report at the scene  indicated a woman  left a parked car with Delaware tags and jumped from the bridge.

According to  Maryland State Police, an officer  spotted the woman on the bridge and stopped his cruiser. The woman gave her name and hometown  and then jumped from the bridge, which can be crossed by pedestrians.

The body of the woman was recovered several minutes after the jump.

The heavily traveled  bridge on Maryland Route 213 crosses the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, which divides Chesapeake City. It is the only crossing that allows pedestrians, according to the Army Corps of Engineers, which manages and maintains the bridge.

Green jeep belonged to the off duty officer. The woman had a red car at the bottom of the bridge. I crossed just before she jumped on my way to get my daughter from school. I saw her standing, looking out, reddish hair, glasses, hair pulled back. I've seen people on the bridge before so while it wasn't something out of the ordinary, something did seem "off" but I couldn't pinpoint it. She was just looking out, didn't seem to be distraught or crying so I kept going. That decision is really on my mind now. On my way back I saw the traffic back up, the police and I thought "Oh God no, she couldn't have!" I said to my daughter "Oh NO there was a lady on the bridge...Oh please no." My worst fear was real and I'm having a hard time getting her face out of my mind. I pray she finds the peace in death she was clearly lacking in life. I pray for her family and friends...how do you deal with something like that? SO very sad.

I was on the opposite site of the bridge. No baby but there was a man with the police officer trying to talk her. So sad and upsetting.
