If your kids' winter pants are hovering above their ankles, Life Community Church in Newark can help.
The church, just over the state line at 750 Otts Chapel Road, is hosting a Kids Clothing Giveaway from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The church hosts the giveaway twice a year and, in-between, organizers seek donations from the public.
Amy Thierry, who is organizing the event for the church, said donations come from church members and from people in the community who just want to get rid of clothes and other items that don't fit their kids any more.
She also solicits donations by passing out flyers at yard sales, consignment shops and other stores and essentially saying, "If you have any extra items, we'll take them."
Thierry said when she sees families with lots of kids, she tells them about the clothing giveaways and offers to take any old clothing off their hands. She often drives to stores and people's homes to collect donated items.
The first clothing giveaway was last spring; the response was so overwhelming that organizers decided to do it again in the fall, Thierry said. She used to store the donations at her home until giveaway time, but now there are so many donations she has to keep them at the church.
She plans to start sorting through everything, arranging items by size and type, today for Saturday's giveaway.
"I don't even know how much stuff we have, but I do know that it's enough for a couple hundred families," she said. "We just had one woman donate seven huge garbage bags full of clothes."
Admission to the event is $2 per adult. All sizes of clothes for all ages, including teens, will be available for free. The event is open to the public and will include a moon bounce, face painting and other children's activities, and refreshments.
Clothing donations will also be accepted during the event, and are welcome at the church throughout the year. Call 302-738-1530 for information.
