After just six regular-season games, first-year Elkton girls' basketball head coach Mike Mason has stepped down from his post, athletic director Jim Leitgeb confirmed Monday morning.
“The head coach stepped away from the team,” Leitgeb said, “and (JV head coach) Lisa Delcollo is going to take over as the varsity coach for the remainder of the year.”
Delcollo brings familiarity with the Golden Elks, having coached them for five seasons from 2008 through last winter. A two-time All-County Coach of the Year, Delcollo holds a 65-52 career record and led Elkton to the 2A State semifinals in 2011, marking the program's first region championship in 30 years.
“Lisa is moving up from JV to varsity,” Leitgeb said. “She knows the program from having coached it the last few years. She feels comfortable in the role, and we feel comfortable having her complete the season and helping the girls out.”
Prior to joining the Elks, Mason had served as a varsity assistant for five years with Archmere Academy in Claymont, Del. He lamented stepping away from Elkton when reached via text message Tuesday afternoon.
"This was the funniest team I ever had, but I had to leave for personal reasons," Mason said. "I love the girls more than they will ever know."
The Elks will enter Tuesday's scheduled Chesapeake Division contest at fourth-ranked North Harford winless at 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the upper division.
